A Tale of Two Cities In the book A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, he compares many characters by including similar and contrasting characteristics between a minor character and a major character. Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton are characters who exemplify this comparison because at the beginning of the novel Carton is portrayed as a drunken, careless man while Darnay on the other hand is the example of what Carton should to be, successful, polite and respectable. While Darnay is considered a major character, he would not be anything if it wasn’t for the physically alike but characteristically different Carton. In the beginning of the novel, Sydney Carton is introduced as the look-alike to Charles Darnay while in court†¦show more content†¦This is the turning point of Carton’s character and behavior towards people because he had previously not done much with his life and could care less about the people he had in it. When Lucie came along, she turned h is life around and he cared for her more than she would ever know. Charles Darnay being the protagonist, kept a very deep secret throughout the book that eventually turned into the climax. He had been the nephew of the extremely evil, heartless, and very much hated Monsieur Evrà ©monde. He had left France for that reason and started a new life in England with Lucie and her family, and becoming a tutor. Darnay and Carton both have a deep love for Lucie but Charles eventually marries Lucie despite the fact that he and Carton look extremely similiar. Darnay’s life is saved by Carton twice the book, but Darnay had not done much for Carton in return. While in the prison cell, Carton and the spy John Barsad help him and Sydney change places so he will die in place of Darney and have Lucie keep her loved ones.
